The Becker came to Vancouver in December 2009 to a Smug Mug meeting and I was blown away by his enthusiasm for photography and in encouraging other photographers to get together, network, share ideas and learn from each other to advance their photography, business and skills in the Wedding photography industry.
The [b] school, created by Becker, is a social network created to connect photographers.
For me its been fantastic as I’ve met some great photographers through this in Vancouver and online, kept up to date with news in the industry and have been able to ask questions from some real pros and have obtained honest feedback on my images too.
Being part of this network makes me forget that the industry is at times and was not always like this (i.e. knowledge sharing). Therefore before joining the [b] school, members are asked to read the rules, with Rule number 4 being of paramount importance.. (Don’t be a prick!).
All members must be either professional or aspiring photographers and must use their real name or business name when posting.
Things I have learnt from the [b] school include:
- Improving processing techniques – from cross processing to using actions
- Critiques on my shots from top professionals in the industry
- Obtaining lens flare in shots
- Using Macro lenses
- Working on albums and designs (chat with Joe Fiore Jr on Study Hall)
- Second shooting do’s and don’ts
- Search engine optimisation – SEO – (chat with Tofurious on Study Hall)
Regular posters in the forum include Matt Saville in Irvine, California, Jenn Lebron in Italy (posting video posts!), Leah Haydock in Plaistow, Chris Fawkes in Melbourne and Lanne Beattie in Brisbane, Australia and I post from London, UK.
The [b] school website does run slowly but the short wait is worth the wealth of information out there and they will be redesigned – keeping up with Beckers philosophy of constant improvement!
Check out study hall which is on every Friday 12am GMT (Thursday 4pm PST) and is also free to non [b] School members too. Its a 1 hour interview or Q&A session hosted by Becker himself.
So get involved and connect with other photographers in your area!
Cheers,
[SK]
